Biography

Information from Clyde Clayton Simmons Author: Clyde Clayton Simmon Publication: not published Note: Genealogical information collected by Clayton Simmons and not included in his book Historical Travel Through Barren County. He collected quite a bit of information on his own family but did not put it in his book since his book was about Barren County and not just the Simmons family.
From a portion of a manuscript titled `Compiled history of the Hamilton Family by Clyde C Simmons` he was the great great grandson of John Hamilton, Sr This couple, together with their children emigrated from Virginia to Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, KY, at an early date. After remaining there for a few years they located in that part of Barren County which is now in Monroe, on the north side of Skagg`s Creek about 2 miles from Sulphur Lick post office. The land on which he located, one thousand acres, was issued to James Quarles, a Revolutionary War soldier. This land grant which is yellow with age is now in the possession of George Hamilton, who resides on a portion of the land owned by his great-great grandfather. It is stated by older members of my family that John Hamilton, Sr purchased this land for twnety-five cents per acre. The early Hamiltons in my family were typical Scotchmen. They were tall, many six feet or over, erect, and in most instances becoming gray in early manhood. They were trustworthy, amiable, temperate, and as charitable as could be expected of the Scotch.`
